|
|
For the record, the following is a copy of Grisoft AVG's response to the subject issue, acknowledging their software reports a false positive on xplorerČ ...
(as posted by realmnot earlier today in another thread):
| Quote: | Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately, the current virus database may detects virus on some
legitimate applications. We can confirm that it is a false alarm. We will
release the new virus update that removes the false positive on this
application. Please update your AVG and check your files when the update
is released.
If you need to restore deleted files from AVG Virus Vault you can do it
this way: open AVG Virus Vault (Start -> Programs -> AVG Antivirus ->
AVG Virus Vault). Locate the file that was removed, right click on it
and choose "Restore File(s)" option.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Best regards,
Mirek Makovec

and here's the response I received, stating again their bad:
| Quote: | Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your email.
Please let us inform you, that this false positive will be removed from the
detection in one of the upcoming virus updates.
We are sorry for inconvenience.

I'm trying to get them give an interim solution but you can try the un-quarantine procedure described above (open AVG Virus Vault (Start -> Programs -> AVG Antivirus -> AVG Virus Vault. Locate the file that was removed, right click on it and choose "Restore File(s)" option) |

I went insane with this yesterday. Not only did it keep bothering me with its false trojan horse alert but it also locked the file xplorer2_UC.exe so that I could no longer open it. I reported it too but have not had the courtesy of a reply yet.
As a temporary workaround I reinstalled v1.7.0.3 which at least allows me to use the program. For some reason unknown to me they seem to have targeted v1.7.0.4 only. |

re: powers of evil
It may seem that way, but I consider AVG and Grisoft, to be good (at least well-meaning), to be reasonably responsive, and to be generally competent although imperfect. After all, they did fix their problem within 24 hours.

if you had to handle all the angry customers that i had to today, you wouldn't be in such an amicable mood
but they (AVG) did react quickly. It was just bad timing that i was releasing the final 1704 as they cocked up their trojan signatures |

Just for the record.. got back to my office at 21:30 BST and X2 now working just fine. I also have used AVG for some years now and found them to be responsive and reliable, but as you say nikos, bad timing. I also just downloaded the new version yesterday as already advised. Great programme BTW. Even VISTA can't seem to phase (faze?) it <BG> |

Even as a non-AVG user, I found a courtesy reply/apology from Grisoft when I opened my email this morning, some 31 hours after had I reported the incident on a Grisoft Sales web-form (the only 'comm-port' into their org. for a non-user that I could find):
[time stamped 13-July-2007, 11:10 CEST]
| Quote: | Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your email.
We truly apologize for the inconvenience this issue might have caused you. Please let us inform you that this false detection issue has already been resolved in our latest AVG update. In order to stop the detection of xplorer2 as a Trojan horse it is needed to update AVG to the latest virus definitions.
If after updating to the latest virus definitions the issue still persists please send us the detected file in a password-protected archive. Please do not forget to include the password in the message.
Thank your for understanding.

Where / how do I report false alarms reported by your AV regarding our product xplorer2 file manager?
Our users are up in arms, falsely thinking that our product contains "Trojan Horse Generic5.GRL", which it does not.
Please fix your signature files ASAP.

Amazing! Darina Grigorova sent you that yesterday and today, at long last, she sends me a reply. But look at what she said...

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your email.
If you think that AVG detects a program wrongly as a virus, please help us improve our virusbase by sending us this file for further analysis. After the analysis if the program is not malicious you will receive the fix with the next updates. Please send us the following information:
1. Send us the file xplorer2_UC.exe in a password-protected archive. Please do not forget to include the password in your e-mail.
How to create a password-protected archive:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/faq/?num=596#596
2. Send us an output of AVGDiag utility: Open AVG -> "Information" menu -> "Technical Support by E-mail" and follow the wizard.
Thank you for your kind cooperation.
Best regards,
Darina Grigorova

My guess is that she is swamped trying to reply to all the false positive reports whether individually, or in groups and does not recognize that the xplorer2 Pro executable can be either xplorer2_UC.exe or xplorer2.exe depending on whether or not the unicode version was installed.
But it is a good thing that she is being thorough and checking all variants without assuming anything. Please send her the file as requested.
